Revision and Proofreading Services

ITC Global offers revision and proofreading services for documents written or translated by your in-house team or third parties, as well as any other content you need reviewed for accuracy, style, and more.

Our Revision and Proofreading Services

We offer several levels of revision and/or proofreading, depending on how strategic your final documents are and how they will be used. For example, a document to be printed must not contain even a single error. Once printed, it will be too late!

Revision & Proofreading

PLEASE NOTE: Before we proofread a document translated elsewhere, we review the initial quality. If it is subpar (e.g., mistranslations), we will advise you to get a new translation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Interpretation

For those who aren’t familiar with them, it’s not always easy to understand the difference between these two terms. Let’s look at the details.

  • Revision consists of verifying the accuracy of a translation (looking for mistranslations, omissions, etc.), ensuring that predefined terminology was used, and adjusting overall style (reformulating phrases that are overly complex or too informal, etc.). In this process, after the translator finishes their work, another linguist compares the target translation to the source text with the goal of improving the translation while ensuring the right message is conveyed and the company’s signature style remains intact. Revision provides an opportunity to see the text through new eyes, as the final reader would experience it. Revision is an important step for all documents that have no room for error in terms of accuracy.

  • Proofreading consists of reviewing spelling, grammar, typography (capitalization, punctuation, typographical errors), style, audience appropriateness, and syntax (structure of phrases). After a translator completes their work, another linguist proofreads the text to catch any errors that the translator may not see after working so closely with their own text. Proofreading is an important step for all documents where emphasis is placed on writing style. Contrary to revision, proofreading focuses only on the target text, which isn’t compared to the source. And it is only completed on the final text. Any edits to the content must be completed before this final proofreading step.
  • Build audience confidence and trust in your business with error-free content
  • Minimize legal and financial risks of errors in regulated industries
  • Save time and money with ready-to-publish content – you won’t have to reprint or retract materials that contain errors, you won’t confuse customers with incorrect or misleading information
  • Protect the reputation of experts writing in their second language
  • Ensure translations are fit-for-purpose with a service that is ISO 17100 certified
  • Evaluate and confirm that content from other providers meets your specifications and the expectations of your target audience with a third-party review

Translation plus revision is a translation industry standard similar to other industries that require double checking work, such as finance, manufacturing, healthcare, and aviation.

Revision provides a second expert review of a project, much like you would ask a colleague to proofread your document when drafting the original content.

Quality control is the process of checking your content before we deliver it to you. During this step, our project managers:

  • Verify that your instructions were followed precisely
  • Check for terminology inconsistencies
  • Verify that numbers, layout, and formatting match the source
  • Check spelling and grammar
  • Verify line breaks and capitalization

A third-party review is when an independent reviewer provides an objective assessment of the quality and accuracy of translated content to make sure it meets the required standards and fits the purpose for which you will use it. The reviewer is a native translator or specialized reviewer who looks for mistranslations, terminology accuracy, and style consistency.

This process is especially important in regulated industries where the consequences of substandard translations can be costly.

A translation memory (TM) is a secure bilingual database specific to your company. Each time we translate a project for you, we add the content to your TM. The next time you send a project, we reuse any matching phrases that have already been translated. This means your projects stay consistent and you save money because we offer steep discounts for matching phrases already translated in your TM.

The ISO 17100 translation service includes human translation, bilingual revision, and proofreading.

The ISO 17100 standard “provides requirements for the core processes, resources, and other aspects necessary for the delivery of a quality translation service that meets applicable specifications. [It also] provides the means by which a translation service provider (TSP) can demonstrate the capability of its processes and resources to deliver a translation service that will meet the client’s and other applicable specifications.”

In other words, the goal of this standard is to outline translation processes and guarantee that a company follows best practices related to translators, technical resources and service quality when providing translation services.
