A Scandinavian Germanic language belonging to the Indo-European family, Danish is the official language of Denmark and the Faroe Islands. It is close to Norwegian and Swedish bokmål, but there are differences with the latter, particularly with regard to punctuation. The origin of this language goes back to the eighth century, with Proto-Northese, later declined into Western Scandinavian (spoken in Norway and Iceland) and Eastern Scandinavian (spoken in Denmark and Sweden).
The distinction between the languages spoken in Denmark and Sweden was made as early as 1100. While dialects were commonly used in the past, this has diminished over the years to bring spoken Danish closer to written Danish, and the vocabulary has been enriched by the influence of French, English and German, which have helped to shape Danish today.
It is one of the official languages of the European Union, along with 24 others. However, the growing use of English in Denmark is increasingly being felt, fueling a movement to defend Danish, notably through the Danish Language Council (the Dansk Sprognævn).
