Over the years, ITC has developed a strong network of translators whose native language is Ukrainian. These linguists have passed several rounds of tests and are evaluated regularly. Ukrainian is the official language of Ukraine and 32 million people list it as their mother tongue. Ukrainian, Russian and Belorussian make up the Eastern branch of the Slavic family of languages that belongs to the large Indo-European language group.
Ukrainian traces its origins to the Old East Slavic, which was spoken on the territory of the former Kievan Rus. The current writing system emerged with the invention of the Cyrillic alphabet in the ninth century by two brothers, monks Cyril and Methodius, who translated the Bible from Greek into Old Slavic, and the introduction of Christianity in the tenth century. Due to historical conditions, it was difficult for the Ukrainian language to develop, yet the Ukrainian people keep it alive, supported by their folklore, songs, and prominent authors.
The similarity of Russian and Ukrainian languages has been widely discussed, but they have principal differences that give us the opportunity to assert that Ukrainian is unique and distinctive. Though being one of the East Slavic languages, Ukrainian has retained some linguistic peculiarities, for example, vocative case when referring to another person. Compared with Russian, Ukrainian has many fewer homonyms, which tells us about the unique lexical diversity of the language.
