Our client, a multinational e-commerce company, wanted to improve how they were communicating workplace safety information to their employees. They hired us to localize an internal safety video so it would be easily understood by all employees at a particular facility.
Project Scope
The project involved the localization of a 20-minute internal video from American English to Canadian French. The target audience included both French- and English-speaking Canadian employees.
Project Process
To achieve this, we used several methods:
Transcription: We transcribed all spoken and written information in the video, including titles and information panels in motion design. This transcription, complete with the video’s time code, was automatically produced and then fully proofread and edited by one of our linguists.
Translation: The transcription was translated from American English to Canadian French by one of our French-speaking translators from Quebec.
Subtitling: Our team added English subtitles to the video, relying on the existing inlays (titles and panels).
Voice Casting: We cast French-speaking Quebecois voice actors who matched the tone of the original voices.
Sound Engineering: We used voiceover, overlaying the Quebec French voices on the original sound.
Motion Design: Graphic production using After Effects was employed to cover or link animations in both languages. And then our team adapted the motion design from English to French.
Results
The result was a video in Canadian French with English subtitles, making the content understandable to all local teams. This comprehensive approach ensured that the internal safety information was effectively communicated to all employees in their language.
